Infectious Diseases

Infectious diseases are caused by the pathogenic organisms by viruses, bacteria and fungus.  Microorganisms present inside the host body are safe normally, under specific conditions become fatal and causes death. Symptoms, inflammation, high fever and immune response results due to pathogens that cause infection by disrupting the host body normal process. The speciality of these emerging infections since past century can be discussed at Infection congress 2019 which is scheduled in LondonUK.

Infections Causes and Symptoms

Infectious diseases are caused by organism bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites. Infection can be passed from direct contact person to person, insects or animals bite, contaminated food or water or organisms exposed environment. Signs and symptoms may vary depends on the organism causing the infection, but regularly includes fever and fatigue. Some of the mild infections can treat by rest and home remedies, while some deadly infections may require hospitalization.

Emerging and Re-Emerging Infectious Diseases

The newly recognised and earlier unknown infections which cause public health problems either locally or globally are Emerging infectious diseases.  Infections showing upward trends in frequency or occurrence worldwide have appeared in areas where they are not earlier found. Infectious that is known earlier, had fallen to low levels that they were no longer recognized public health problems

Epidemiology

The investigation of the study of disease transmission of irresistible malady includes the event, recurrence and variables of contaminations in individuals. Diseases are one of the real reasons for sickness, loss of economy and deaths. Infectious Diseases execute and assess contributions at the individual and network level to reduce contamination and, among those with diseases, to restrain advancement of illness or ailment related passing and sick wellbeing.

Antimicrobial Agents

Chemical substances or drugs that are used to kill or slow the growth of microbes are antimicrobial agents. There are different types of antimicrobial drugs based on the organism they act against example antibiotics acts against bacteria and antifungal agents act against fungi. Synthetic chemicals as well as chemical substances or metabolic products made by microorganisms and chemical substances derived from plants can also be treated by antimicrobial agents.

Infection Prevention, Control and Treatment

The transmission of communicable diseases in all health care aspects is required for infection prevention and control. Some prevention must be followed like sanitation, hand washing, food and water safety and vaccination for infection prevention and control to decrease the spread of microorganisms and diseases. Antimicrobial agents are also used to prevent infections caused by animals.

STD and Contact Diseases

Infections that are passed from one person to another through sexual contact is known as STDs (Sexually Transmitted Diseases). Bacteria, parasites, yeast and viruses are the causes of sexually transmitted diseases, there are more than 20 types of STDs example genital herpes, gonorrhea, HIV/AIDS, syphilis and trichomoniasis etc. STDs affect both men and women, but in many cases health problems are severe for women. STDs caused by bacteria, yeast or parasites can be treated by antibiotics, there is no cure for STDs caused by virus but medicines can help in prevention and control.

Malaria and Hemorrhagic fever

Fever which including Ebola and Marburg, Lassa fever, and yellow fever viruses with a group of four families of viruses is viral Hemorrhagic fever. Damage of blood vessels and affect to organs and affect to body ability to regulate itself  are the common features of  VHFs. Protozoan diseases caused by  four species of  plasmodium genus is malaria. VHFs cause mild diseases but some like Ebola or Marburg, cause severe diseases and death.

Recent Outbreaks and their Control

Outbreaks of preventable infectious diseases are difficult to maintain. Despite the introduction of vaccines many decades ago, many people grasp the prominence of getting   vaccinated in order to avoid the preventable infectious diseases. Vaccines are very cheap, highly effective and available for everyone. However outbreaks happen all the time.

Food and Water borne Infections

Consuming contaminated foods or beverages causes foodborne diseases. The beginning of symptoms may occur within minutes to weeks and regularly occur as flu-like symptoms. Symptoms of infected person are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or fever as the symptoms are flu-like many people may not recognize that the sickness is caused by bacteria or other pathogen in food. Foodborne disease can be prevented by proper cooking or by processing the food to kill the pathogens.

Pulmonary/Chest Infections

Infection of the lungs or airways is known as chest infection. The main types of chest infection are bronchitis and pneumonia. Most viruses lead to increase in bronchitis, whereas most bacteria lead to increase in development of pneumonia. When an infected person coughs or sneezes infections are usually spread. Virus or bacteria fluid droplets into the air, where they can be inhaled in by others cause infections.

Neurological Infectious Diseases

Infections of nervous system are generally known as neurological infections. The most challenging neurological disorders among the nervous system are viral and immune mediated disorders.  Multiple sclerosis is one of the most common neuro immune disorders, and the most common viral infection of the nervous system is HIV. The progressive loss of neurons, resulting in significant cognitive and motor dysfunction is common to both disorders.

Neglected & Tropical Infectious diseases

Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) – a diverse group of communicable diseases that prevail in tropical and subtropical conditions they are caused by a variety of pathogens such as viruses, bacteria, protozoa and helminths.  More than one billion people globally are affected by these neglected tropical diseases the group of parasitic and bacterial diseases causes substantial illness. According to the reports from World Health Organization (WHO), the major diseases of concern are malaria, which affects more than one third of the world’s population.

Air borne infectious diseases and T.B control

Airborne diseases are caused by pathogens that can be transmitted through air. When an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks, spewing nasal and throat secretions into the air airborne diseases can be spreader. Tuberculosis (TB) is primarily an airborne disease caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which are spread person-to-person through the air. This bacteria mainly affects the lungs, but may adversely affect other organs.

Host and Pathogen Interaction

Most of the terminology used to define the host-microbe interaction has been in use for nearly a century. Later, new information about the attributes of microbes and their hosts resulted in the understanding that the host pathogen interaction does not always result in disease. This recognition, in turn, led to the introduction of terms to explain states in which microbes exist within hosts without causing overt disease and why some microbes only cause disease in certain hosts. Commensal, carrier state, and opportunist were terms put forth to account for microbes and conditions that were sometimes associated with disease but for which Koch's postulates could not be fulfilled for one reason or another.

Zoonotic Infectious Diseases

Diseases spread between animals to humans are zoonotic diseases. Zoonotic diseases are spread by viruses, bacteria, parasites, and fungi. Symptoms and signs are different for zoonotic diseases caused by parasites other people may have symptoms such as diarrhea, muscle aches, and fever. When animals such as cows are infected with parasites such as Cryptosporidium or Trichinella food can also be some source of zoonotic diseases.

Current Research and Approaches

Drugs, chemicals or other substances to treat infectious disease can include either antibacterial or antiviral agents. Along with the discovery, development and clinical use of antibacterial drugs, the mortality from bacterial infections has been substantially reduced in the 20th century. However, antibiotic resistant pathogens have accelerated emergence as a consequence of widespread and injudicious use of antibacterial drugs, which results in a serious threat to global public health.

About Infection:

Infections are caused by microorganisms resides inside the host body.  The colonization of microbes is beneficial and sometimes fatal, vary according to the host immune resistance and drug susceptibility. In general, biologist classified living organisms which are called as bacteria, virus, protozoa, fungi, Parasites, Prions, Viroid’s (plant pathogens, they affect the health of plants). The overlap of the kingdoms in this figure is intentional, because, given the evolution of increasingly complex and diverse species.

The human with an infection-causing agent inside the body called host and organisms as a parasite. These tiny microbes colonize inside the body and reproduce. The organism that causes infection is also called an infectious agent. The resided organism that harms a host's health is often called a pathogen. The infection can be varied to different stages in accordance with various types of infectious agents that establish a successful site of infection in the host cause disease. Infectious agents come in many shapes and sizes. The single-celled microscopic organisms are called Bacteria and protozoa, while viruses are even smaller. Fungi grow like plants and helminths that resemble worms.

The death rate of people is more due to infectious diseases than any other single cause. Infectious diseases are caused by microbes. Microbes are tiny living organisms which are ubiquitous and are omnipresent- in air, soil and water. The mode of transmission of infection varies different ways by touching, eating, drinking or breathing something that contains a germ, spread through an animal, insect bites, and sexual contact.

Regional Deaths WHO Report:

The low- and middle-income countries particularly South-East Asia and Western Pacific Regions are had largest disease burden in 2012, with a total of 7.3 million deaths reported by WHO (World Health Organisation) regions, most attributable to indoor and outdoor air pollution. Further regional statistics listed in the report include:

2.2 million deaths annually in the African Region

847 000 deaths annually in Region of the Americas

854 000 deaths annually in Eastern Mediterranean Region

1.4 million deaths annually in European Region

3.8 million deaths annually in South-East Asia Region

3.5 million deaths annually in Western Pacific Region

Epidemiological Data:

Most of people deaths are caused by disease and injury categories. The report finds that the vast majority of environment-related deaths are due to cardiovascular diseases, such as stroke and ischaemic heart disease:

Stroke – 2.5 million deaths annually

Ischaemic heart disease – 2.3 million deaths annually

Unintentional injuries (such as road traffic deaths) – 1.7 million deaths annually

Cancers – 1.7 million deaths annually

Chronic respiratory diseases – 1.4 million deaths annually

Diarrhoeal diseases – 846 000 deaths annually

Respiratory infections – 567 000 deaths annually

Neonatal conditions – 270 000 deaths annually

Malaria – 259 000 deaths annually

Intentional injuries (such as suicides) – 246 000 deaths annually

Recent Outbreak (Zika virus):

Zika virus is the current outbreak occurring from in many countries. It is affected to people primarily through the bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito (Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus). Zika can also be passed through sex from a person who has Zika to his or her sex partners and it can also spread by pregnant woman to her fetus. The National Institutes of Health, USA say trials for Zika vaccine is about to start in September this year. Depending on the results, larger trials could begin at the start of 2017. Up to date 2015-16 total 69 Zika Virus cases reported with 16 live born infants with birth defects and 5 total pregnancy losses with birth defects.

According to research and consulting firm Global Data the infectious diseases point-of-care testing (POCT) market is set to rise from $696.1 million in 2015 to just over $1.17 billion by 2022, represents a compound annual growth rate of 7.7%, which are top causes of environment-related deaths. The global data Analysis covering Medical Devices, explains the main barrier to the acceptability of infectious disease POC tests has been their relatively low accuracy. The sensitivity and specificity achieved with the currently available lateral flow technologies at the POC are, at present, inferior to those achievable in central labs utilizing nucleic acid methods. Global Data:

In accordance to IDSA Infectious Diseases Society of America (National Medical Society) & Global Infectious Diseases Association, there is an urgent, immediate need for new therapeutic agents with activity against these resistant infectious diseases causing tricky invaders. IDSA is encouraged by the prospect of success for some agents currently in preclinical development to control infectious diseases caused by antibiotic-resistant microbes. But still, there is no evidence that this need will be fulfilled in the predictable future. Furthermore, we remain concerned that the infrastructure for discovering and developing new antibacterial continues to stagnate, thereby risking the future pipeline of antibacterial drugs.
